Hello! I’m Justine, the proofreader here at Denfield. Having previously worked for myself on a freelance basis, I really appreciate the buzz of being in a studio environment without relying on my trusty dictionary for company. The role ensures a good balance of working intensely on my own and also speaking to account managers and designers about how to maximise the potential in every single job that comes through the agency.
In any one day, I might work on up to 50 projects, which is perfect for someone who thrives on variety! These can range from proofing social media posts and checking artwork, to updating figures and small print in car finance tables and tweaking creative copy for brochures. A keen eye for detail, bags of patience, the ability to work under pressure and to prioritise projects are all key characteristics of being a proofreader, which is why I believe this is the perfect job for me!
I’ve always had a passion for all things language-related, and I soon realised back in my school days that I had a talent for Modern Foreign Languages. Plus, of course, it also became evident that this was a bona fide reason to travel beyond Yorkshire! I went on to study French and German at University, leading on to an MA in Applied Translation Studies.
My first job as a graduate was as a junior translator and translation checker for a London-based agency, before moving into TEFL-teaching in Québec and subsequently working as a primary school teacher in Somerset specialising in Literacy and MFL. Not content with my work-life balance, I then turned my hand to holistic therapies, training in massage, aromatherapy and reflexology, supplementing my spa work with a proofreading and admin role for an educational resources company in Bristol. I feel that I’ve been fortunate to have experienced these different roles in my career to date, and they have definitely informed my choice to now channel my energy and skills into full-time proofreading.
Right from the start, I was immediately struck by the zest and energy of the Denfield team. It’s rare to be able to work with such a genuinely friendly team of people and it really does help the day to pass in a positive way. In fact, I was so inspired on my very first day that I proposed to my boyfriend when I got home… and he said yes!
