Goodbye, Greenery – there's a new colour for the new year!
Last year’s Pantone Colour of the Year, (Pantone 15-0343) aka ‘Greenery’, was close to our hearts at Denfield as it was so very similar to our own characterful shade (Pantone® 376 in case you’ve forgotten).
The annual announcement of the ‘Colour of the Year’ is always an interesting one as you can be sure that the chosen colour will soon start to pop up in all areas of life, in fashion, packaging, advertising etc., so it was with interest this year that we waited in anticipation for the announcement of Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2018…
…and we haven’t been disappointed! This year, the colour gods at Pantone have decreed that Pantone 18-3838 (Pantone 2096 C) or ‘Ultra Violet’ is the colour we will all be swooning over for a solid 365 days. Ultra Violet is a dramatic blue-based purple, not quite as dark as a certain local chocolate manufacturer’s infamous purple hue!
Purple combines the calmness of blue with the energy of red and has often been associated with creativity, wisdom, exploration, grandeur, royalty, quality and extravagance.
Taken from the cool side of the colour wheel, Pantone’s blue-toned Ultra Violet leans more into the creativity and exploration side of things with them referencing the likes of Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix, all of whom they say “brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality”.
The Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, said: “From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
As we enter 2018, the feeling of being perched on the edge of new possibilities is well represented by Ultra Violet.
So without further ado, here’s to 2018 and what’s to come, both at Denfield and beyond...
