How work experience can kick-start your advertising career
As part of Work Experience Month 2017, we wanted to highlight just how important gaining work experience within the advertising industry can be to your career.
As with any industry, truly discovering whether you enjoy it will come from learning about it and experiencing what it’s really like. There is no point in putting your all into something just to realise that you don’t actually like it in the end – and as we spend the vast majority of our time at work, enjoying what you do is crucial.
If you think that advertising and marketing might just be the career path for you, take any opportunity you can to gain as much experience within the industry as is humanly possible. Knowledge is power, so the more you know and understand, the easier your decisions will turn out to be in the long run.
As well as giving you the background knowledge to help you decide if the industry is right for you, work experience also gives you the soft skills needed to effectively work within an office environment, for example: teamwork, communication and even commercial awareness, all of which are essential skills that employers will look for when hiring their next recruit.
Taking the opportunity to do some work experience in your school holidays shows initiative, which will help you stand out from your peers when you are looking to secure that all-important role – it shows that you’re willing to go out of your way to gain the experience you need to be able to excel. Make sure that you display your interest within the industry, and don’t be scared to ask questions! By being inquisitive and finding out more information on what you are being told, or asking why something is being done a certain way, will all help you to learn and advance. Whether you are looking to take the next step in your education or are looking to jump into the world of work, asking questions is key.
The information you gain from this experience will be beneficial in more than one way. On top of what has already been discussed, work experience also helps to prepare you for job interviews and the applications to get you there. Work experience is an essential aspect of your CV and in the long run, employers are going to value this as much as your grades, so don’t underestimate its potential. Just think – if there are 20 people applying for the same role with the same grades and you are the only one with experience in the industry, who are they going to employ?
Undertaking work experience within a business or agency also has the potential to help you secure a role in the future. Throughout your placement, ensure that you are enthusiastic, work hard on all the tasks you are given and ask questions to show you are willing to learn – there is a strong possibility that once you have finished your education and are looking for a role, you can go back to where you started. The employer will already know you, will know if your personality fits into their organisation and have the benefit of knowing that you already understand how they operate.
